Waiting to Die - 2

My friend Elizabeth
is starving herself.

She awaits death
petting her stuffed cat,
her remaining symbol
of something to love.

They care for her here.
Keep her warm.
For the most part respect her wishes.

I am reminded of a passage in the “Executioner’s Song”
where Mikal Gilmore stopped his appeal and let go of his brother.

What else can you do in the end
but show honor to those you love.

(if you truly love them.)
